Harkness Preserve

Location: Rockport

Protected: 1996

Acreage: 23 acres

Description: Named in honor of one of the first settlers in this area and a revolutionary war hero, this Preserve was generously donated to us by Mary Cramer and the Nature Conservancy. During John Harkness's time, magnificent American chestnut trees provided food, shelter, and shade to human and animal alike. Foreign disease has since wiped out all but the hardiest of trees throughout their range in America. The Harkness Preserve still harbors a mature stand of American Chestnuts, one of the last two in Maine.
