McLellan-Poor Preserve

Location: Northport

Protected: 2007

Acreage: 61 acres

Description: Named the McLellan-Poor Preserve in honor of family members that loved the Little River, the 61-acre preserve contains spectacular wildlife habitat. On a recent winter excursion, our Conservation Project Manager Heather Bruce discovered signs of coyote, beaver, fox and deer on the property. Large stands of mature pines tower over the shores of the Little River reservoir, and dense forests of spruce, fir, and hemlock line healthy streams feeding into the river.

Conservation History: The McLellan-Poor Preserve was donated to Maine Coast Heritage Trust by Hugh McLellan Russell who devoted the final two decades of his life to acquiring land on the southern bluffs of the river to protect its wildlife habitat. A third generation resident of the shores of the Little River, McLellan Russell bequested the land to Maine Coast Heritage Trust, a statewide land trust. Maine Coast Heritage Trust, who in turn transferred the property to us to serve as the long-term owners and stewards.
