SUMMARY:Nature Program Talk: Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs\, and Hermit Bill
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 30th at 6:30PM\, Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Camden Public Library host wildlife biologist and author Ron Joseph as he recounts the highlights of his storied career. \nIn Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs\, and Hermits: Memoirs of a Wildlife Biologist\, Ron shares his stories of growing up in rural Maine\, working as a wildlife biologist\, and meeting Mainers like retired dairy farmers Ruth and Martin French of Dover-Foxcroft\, who repurposed their barn’s empty cow stalls into a wildlife rehabilitation center. The couple specialized in rescuing orphaned bear cubs\, providing solitary cubs with teddy bears as temporary surrogate litter mates while biologists scrambled to find sow bears willing to adopt the orphans. The book includes humorous stories\, such as one about the time he had to count piles of deer dung on designated mile-long lines and encountered a woman who bluntly asked\, “So you went to college for that?” Other stories border on the absurd\, including one of an influential legislator who pressured Ron to spray concentrated wolf urine on 30 miles of Route 201 in a harebrained waste of taxpayer money to supposedly reduce moose-vehicle collisions. Many of the book’s stories have previously been published in Down East\, Maine Boats Homes and Harbors\, Bangor Daily News\, Moosehead Messenger\, PenBay Pilot\, and elsewhere.\nNovelist Paul Doiron will join him to discuss his latest work: Dead Man’s Wake. \nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. Please contact maevec@coastalmountains.org to register. \nKirk Gentalen is the regional stewardship manager for mid-coast Maine for Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) and writes about the ecology of the area in his Nature Bummin’ blog. A self-described nature observer\, one of his passions is tracking wildlife especially in winter. He can read their tracks like the news and figure out what the critters have been up to. Kirk takes care of MCHT conserved lands on Vinalhaven and North Haven islands. That means taking care of trail and forestry needs and monitoring easements. He connects with island residents through environmental education\, volunteering\, and outreach programs. Join Beech Hill birding authority and photographer Brian Willson for a guided walk as he identifies our avian visitors and year-round residents. \nWe will meet at the trailhead at 316 Beech Hill Rd. at 7:30AM. DESCRIPTION:May is the time when many birds return to Maine for the summer or migrate through on their way further north. Birding is an amazing way for youth to build appreciation for nature\, explore their connection to place\, and most of all\, have fun! \nJoin Coastal Mountains Land Trust and youth birder and climate activist Laura Hepner at Head of Tide Preserve on Saturday\, May 18 for a morning of birdwatching and discussion. We will walk the 1.5 mile trail to explore the songbirds\, warblers\, raptors\, and wetland species\, then engage in conversation about the changes these birds are experiencing during migration.  \nThis program is intended for anyone interested in birds ages 10-14. \nDirections: From downtown Belfast\, take Main Street west and immediately turn right onto Waldo Avenue. We will meet at the Thorndike Brook trailhead at 9:00AM on Friday\, June 14th and hike an out-and-back path lasting approximately 1.5 hours.  \nThroughout June\, we’re celebrating our Evergreen members\, who make trails and community events possible with recurring support for local conservation. Starting June 1st\, new Evergreen members will receive two copies of our newly printed Trail Guide\, a Coastal Mountains baseball hat or a beanie\, member stickers\, and our newsletter.  \nLand Trust members\, Midcoast residents\, and anyone visiting from away are welcome to attend this hike! Mistakes\, fakes\, wonders\, and blunders – no play contains more comedy\, or more errors.\nThis free outdoor performance begins at 1:00PM on Sunday\, July 14th on top of Beech Hill! Bring your friends\, family\, and a picnic\, but please leave dogs at home. No tickets or registration required.\nFor the quickest route up the hill\, park at the main trailhead located at 316 Beech Hill Rd. From the trailhead\, the top is a 0.6 mile walk up a steady incline.
