SUMMARY:Arts on the Hill: Novel Jazz Septet
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Mountains Land Trust’s Arts on the Hill program brings the Novel Jazz Septet to Beech Hill Preserve on Tuesday\, September 9 at 6:00 p.m. as part of this popular summer concert series.  \nThe Novel Jazz Septet\, led by trombonist Barney Balch\, is seven hepcats from all over Maine who have been performing together for years. They are huge fans of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn\, two jazz composers who\, between them\, wrote more than 3\,000 pieces. \n For the past few years\, Novel Jazz Septet has been on a mission to transcribe some of the pair’s lesser-known tunes and shine a modern light on them. Balch is so committed to this project that he periodically visits the National Archives in Washington\, D.C.\, to work with Ellington’s original manuscripts. \n  \nFourteen of Novel Jazz’s reinterpretations are now available on the CD "The Novel Jazz Septet Live: Ellington and Strayhorn Rediscovered." I’ve been listening to it all week\, and think that "Lotus Blossom" and "Mood Indigo\," among several others\, are sensational. It was Ellington himself who said\, "The wise musicians are those who play what they can master." The Novel Jazz Septet can rest easy with this knowledge. \nAll Arts on the Hill performances are free and open to all ages but please leave your dogs at home. \nArts on the Hill is made by possible and presented by Camden National Bank\, Cold Mountain Builders\, Bangor Savings Bank\, Camden Coast Real Estate\, and Dirt Play.

SUMMARY:Happy Wanderers: Waldo Pound Preserve to Belfast Area Children's Center
DESCRIPTION:Join Coastal Mountains Land Trust (CMLT) and MaineHealth’s Community Health program for a Happy Wanderers ~3-mile hike starting at the Waldo Pound Preserve and ending at the Belfast Area Children’s Center (BACC)’s newly-built Learning Landscape. The Hills to Sea Trail connects these two areas for a small section of its 47-mile journey from Belfast Harbor to Unity College. \nThe hike will be led by CMLT volunteer Bindy Pendleton and Anne Dreeson\, a longtime BACC staff member. Anne helped organize and build much of the childcare center’s new Learning Landscape. This area is unique in that it looks out over a marsh and beaver habitat and was designed for young children and stroller use. \nThere will be two options for participants during this hike. Wanderers can do a 2.4- mile loop trail or extend their walk to BACC and check out their Learning Landscape\, which is being used by the Center for nature-based education.  Transportation will be provided  back to the Waldo Pound Preserve for hikers who choose this latter option.  Both of these hiking opportunities include minimal elevation gain. \nAll are welcome! \nPark & meet at the Waldo Pound Preserve parking lot at 288 Kendall Corner Rd. in Waldo. \n Bring/wear: hiking footwear\, water\, warm layers\, tick protection and rain gear (if needed). \nTo register\, email Rosie at rosieh@coastalmountains.org.
