Wanderers are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and linger a bit longer to enjoy the magic of the island after the hike finishes around noon. \nThis hike is part of the Happy Wanderers walking series\, which explores preserves and trails throughout Knox and Waldo counties. Led by longtime CMLT member Bindy Pendleton\, these hikes offer a chance to connect with fellow walkers while learning more about the Land Trust’s work to conserve land and connect people with nature across the western Penobscot Bay region. \nAll are welcome! \nDirections: Sears Island is located at the end of Sears Island Road\, off Route 1\, just east of downtown Searsport. DESCRIPTION:EVENT CANCELLED DUE TO HEAVY RAIN – Join Coastal Mountains Land Trust (CMLT) on a guided hike along the trails of the Mclellan-Poor Preserve in Northport. The trail has minimal elevation gain and is almost entirely forested along the southern shore of Little River Lower Reservoir. The reservoir makes up part of the southern Little River watershed before it finds it’s way into the Bay.  The trail crosses several streams\, which have created distinct ravines throughout the landscape. The guides will offer hikers a couple of options to choose from\, ranging from 2.2-miles to over 3-miles. \nThis hike is part of the Happy Wanderers walking series\, which explores preserves and trails throughout Knox and Waldo counties. SUMMARY:Nature Program: Measuring Change in the Ducktrap Forest
DESCRIPTION:Photo credit: JP Raite\nJoin Coastal Mountains Land Trust and student researcher JP Raite for a 2.5-mile walk and talk about our changing forest. JP recently led a team of UMaine Forestry students in establishing permanent monitoring plots within Ducktrap Preserve to track changes in forest health and structure as this region faces increasing pressures from climate change\, invasive species\, and tree pests and pathogens.\nWe’ll visit three plots in hemlock\, ash\, and beech stands\, where JP will share findings from her first year of data collection. Identification guides will be available for anyone interested in getting better acquainted with our native species. On the return walk\, we’ll slow down for some quiet forest bathing and\, with luck\, a hermit thrush serenade.\nAll ages are welcome to this free public event! The trail is well maintained with moderate elevation gain.\nDirections: Meet at the Ducktrap Preserve trailhead parking lot  (2749 Belfast Rd.\, Lincolnville\, ME 04849). We may wander a mile or less\, depending on how many interesting birds\, plants\, and mammal signs we stop to admire. Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s exceptional Regional Stewardship Manager\, Kirk Gentalen\, will lead the hike and share his observations and stories of the island’s inhabitants. \nParking is very limited\, so we will use the overflow parking .75 miles before you arrive at the island’s causeway. Rides will be provided to the trailhead. Please arrive 10 -15 minutes before the hike\, to allow time to shuttle walkers to the trailhead. \nDirections: From the junction of Route 1 and Route 131\, east of downtown Thomaston\, follow Route 131 south. Drive 5.3 miles and turn left onto Route 73. In 0.9 miles\, bear right onto Clark Island Road. Continue until you see the welcoming faces of Maine Coast Heritage Trust\, Coastal Mountains\, and Community Health’s staff showing you where the overflow parking is! DESCRIPTION:Join the Maine Mycological Society as they lead a mushroom walk on the Coastal Mountains Land Trust’s Ragged Mountain trail\, starting from the Thorndike Brook trailhead in Hope. \nLearn how to identify mushrooms found along the path and soak-up the inspiration and knowledge of mushroom enthusiasts. The interwoven world of fungi is enthralling. Everyone is welcome! \nBring warm layers\, tick and insect protection\, water and sturdy walking footwear. \nLocation: 223 Hope street\, Hope. \nDirections: From Camden\, take Rt. 1 south\, then take Rt. 90 west. After 2.5 miles\, turn right onto Rt. 17. Continue 2.7 miles then turn right onto Hope St. There are two trailheads on this road.
