SUMMARY:Arts on the Hill: MoJO Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Coastal Mountains Land Trust’s Arts on the Hill program brings Mondaynite Jazz Orchestra (aka MoJO) to Beech Hill Preserve on Sunday\, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. as part of this popular and free summer concert series. Rained out THREE times this summer\, MoJO’s pent up energy will have Beech Hill hopping! \nMondaynite Jazz Orchestra is an extraordinary 18-piece Midcoast-based big band that plays modern as well as traditional jazz\, including Latin\, swing\, blues\, and funk. The band derives its name from their practice schedule: Monday nights\, and they certainly have their mojo workin’. \nPlan to bring a picnic\, relax and enjoy the spectacular view…unless you’re up dancing to the beat! \nAll Arts on the Hill performances are free and open to all ages but please leave your dogs at home. \nArts on the Hill is made by possible and presented by lead sponsors Cold Mountain Builders and Emily and Jonathan McDevitt and partner sponsors Maine Coast Orthodontics\, Bangor Savings Bank\, and Camden Coast Real Estate.

SUMMARY:Coastal Mountains Nature Program walk: Geology of Sears Island DATE CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:Due to rain in the forecast\, this walk has been rescheduled until Saturday\, October 14. Coastal Mountains Nature Program\, in partnership with Friends of Sears Island\, presents Geology of Sears Island on Saturday\, October 7 from 2:30pm – 5:30 p.m. at Sears Island in Searsport. The popular Coastal Mountains Nature Program is a series of monthly naturalist-led walks and talks exploring the natural history of Mid-Coast Maine. \nDr. Steve Norton\, Professor Emeritus of Earth and Climate Sciences at the University of Maine\, will lead us on an exploration of the past 350 million years of Mid-Coast geological history by exploring the rocks and sediment of Sears Island. This walk is timed to take advantage of low tide\, exposing the shoreline of the island. Meet at the entrance to Sears Island at the end of the causeway in Searsport. \nThe number of participants will be capped at 50\, so be sure to register early! Email info@coastalmountains.org to secure your spot. \nDIRECTIONS\nFrom downtown Searsport\, drive 2 miles northeast on Route 1 to Sears Island Road (which will be on the right if driving from the town of Searsport). Continue on Sears Island Road across the causeway to the island. Park on the causeway. \nHunting is allowed on the island so participants are suggested to wear hunter orange.

SUMMARY:Nature Program Talk: Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs\, and Hermit Bill
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 30th at 6:30PM\, Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Camden Public Library host wildlife biologist and author Ron Joseph as he recounts the highlights of his storied career. \nIn Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs\, and Hermits: Memoirs of a Wildlife Biologist\, Ron shares his stories of growing up in rural Maine\, working as a wildlife biologist\, and meeting Mainers like retired dairy farmers Ruth and Martin French of Dover-Foxcroft\, who repurposed their barn’s empty cow stalls into a wildlife rehabilitation center. The couple specialized in rescuing orphaned bear cubs\, providing solitary cubs with teddy bears as temporary surrogate litter mates while biologists scrambled to find sow bears willing to adopt the orphans. The book includes humorous stories\, such as one about the time he had to count piles of deer dung on designated mile-long lines and encountered a woman who bluntly asked\, “So you went to college for that?” Other stories border on the absurd\, including one of an influential legislator who pressured Ron to spray concentrated wolf urine on 30 miles of Route 201 in a harebrained waste of taxpayer money to supposedly reduce moose-vehicle collisions. Many of the book’s stories have previously been published in Down East\, Maine Boats Homes and Harbors\, Bangor Daily News\, Moosehead Messenger\, PenBay Pilot\, and elsewhere.\nNovelist Paul Doiron will join him to discuss his latest work: Dead Man’s Wake. \nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom. Please visit the “What’s Happening” adults events calendar at librarycamden.org to register for a Zoom link to attend this webinar.

SUMMARY:Nature Program: Tracking Workshop with Kirk Gentalen
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tracking workshop led by Kirk Gentalen\, naturalist and Stewardship Manager at Maine Coast Heritage Trust! This workshop will explore the hidden lives of animals who call Midcoast Maine home and teach participants the basics of identifying various tracks. \nLocation: Tanglewood 4H Camp and Learning Center in Lincolnville \nDirections: Follow the Tanglewood road until you can’t go any further (because of the gate that is closed in the winter). \nRegistration: This program is free and open to all ages. Please contact maevec@coastalmountains.org to register. \nKirk Gentalen is the regional stewardship manager for mid-coast Maine for Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT) and writes about the ecology of the area in his Nature Bummin’ blog. A self-described nature observer\, one of his passions is tracking wildlife especially in winter. He can read their tracks like the news and figure out what the critters have been up to. Kirk takes care of MCHT conserved lands on Vinalhaven and North Haven islands. That means taking care of trail and forestry needs and monitoring easements. He connects with island residents through environmental education\, volunteering\, and outreach programs. He also compiles wildlife sightings on Vinalhaven in a most entertaining blog! \nThe Coastal Mountains Nature Program is a series of year-round free guided walks and talks led by Maine-based naturalists with varying areas of expertise. Topics range from vernal pools\, to bird migration\, to geology! Sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Instagram to hear about upcoming programs.
