SUMMARY:Beech Nut New Year's Open House
DESCRIPTION:Ringin the New Year with an invigorating hike at Beech Hill Preserve! Land Truststaff will open Beech Nut\, the historic sod-roofed stone hut on top of BeechHill\, for this special event from 11AM-1PM\, Monday January 1st. The Beech nut will welcomeyou with a toasty fire\, lit chandeliers\, hot chocolate\, and cookies (if youhave any leftover holiday cookies\, bring them on up!). A sweet start to 2023! \nDresswarmly and wear appropriate footwear. No spikes or crampons will be allowed inthe hut (it scratches our beautiful tiles). \nWatchfor signs to park on designated side of the road if the Beech Hill Road lot isfull. \nFor the easiest route to the Beech Nut\, please park at the trailhead located at 316 Beech Hill Rd.

We’re inviting all members to join us in making\nfresh tracks along the Round the Mountain Trail on Tuesday\, January 9 th !\nWe will split into two groups. Both skiers and snowshoers will be joined by a staff\nmember from the Land Trust.\nIf conditions do not allow for a snowy excursion\, we will still hike the trails! Be sure to\nbring appropriate footwear\, including spikes if needed. Skis and snowshoes will not be\nprovided.\nWe will meet at 12PM at the Thorndike Brook trailhead located at 223 Hope Street in Hope\n(Google maps does not show this accurately). For the Thorndike Brook Trailhead turn onto Hope\nStreet from Route 17 (eight miles north of Rockland) or from Gillette Road. The parking lot is just\npast the existing parking lot for the Georges Highland Path (¾ miles from Route 17).\nNo registration is necessary! All members are welcome to join!

SUMMARY:Nature Program Talk: Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs\, and Hermit Bill
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, January 30th at 6:30PM\, Coastal Mountains Land Trust and the Camden Public Library host wildlife biologist and author Ron Joseph as he recounts the highlights of his storied career. \nIn Bald Eagles\, Bear Cubs\, and Hermits: Memoirs of a Wildlife Biologist\, Ron shares his stories of growing up in rural Maine\, working as a wildlife biologist\, and meeting Mainers like retired dairy farmers Ruth and Martin French of Dover-Foxcroft\, who repurposed their barn’s empty cow stalls into a wildlife rehabilitation center. The couple specialized in rescuing orphaned bear cubs\, providing solitary cubs with teddy bears as temporary surrogate litter mates while biologists scrambled to find sow bears willing to adopt the orphans. The book includes humorous stories\, such as one about the time he had to count piles of deer dung on designated mile-long lines and encountered a woman who bluntly asked\, “So you went to college for that?” Other stories border on the absurd\, including one of an influential legislator who pressured Ron to spray concentrated wolf urine on 30 miles of Route 201 in a harebrained waste of taxpayer money to supposedly reduce moose-vehicle collisions. Many of the book’s stories have previously been published in Down East\, Maine Boats Homes and Harbors\, Bangor Daily News\, Moosehead Messenger\, PenBay Pilot\, and elsewhere.\nNovelist Paul Doiron will join him to discuss his latest work: Dead Man’s Wake. \nThis is a hybrid program and will take place in person in the Picker Room at the Camden Public Library as well as on Zoom.
