Trail Descriptions
Loop Trail: 2.4 mi round trip, 200 ft elevation gain, moderate. Hills to Sea Trail: 46 mi long network. Hike the Loop Trail to connect to the Hills to Sea Trail.
Preserve Profile
The 117-acre Preserve is mostly forested, low on its southern side and slightly hilly on its north side. Built in 2025, the trail meanders through a mixed age forest with towering pine trees and healthy cedar groves.
Special Information
The Preserve is adjacent to the Waldo County Technical Center, and a short walk on the Hills to Sea Trail away from the Belfast Area Children's Center.
Directions
From Belfast, turn onto High Street heading north (towards the Route 1 bridge), go past Route 1 and turn left onto Vine Street, following signs for Route 137. Turn right onto Route 137 north, continue for 4.1 miles. Turn left onto Kendall Corner Road. Continue for 0.4 miles. The parking area is on the right in the field.
History
The property was conserved through a partial donation for David and Anne Somers in 2023.
Natural History
The Preserve is named for the cattle pound, the remnants of which can be found in the western edge of the property. In the 19th century, loose livestock from the surrounding area were taken to the pound until their owners retrieved them.
